Community Helpers

This unit is so much fun!!  We've continued to have tons of pretend play in the fire station (AKA home center), we've added a ladder and headlights to our firetruck, we've met a police officer and his dog named Buddy, and we met a Zilker dad who is also a fire fighter.  Yay!

Zilker Fire Station!

Last week we finished painting our big box red.  Soon it will be a fire truck!  Watch for new things to be added this week.  The home center is now the Zilker Fire Station.  Today we put on fire fighter hats, jackets, and boots, and rescued Nina the Newt from a towering inferno.  We were very brave fire fighters!  We also started painting black dots on dog shapes to make Dalmatians.  And, as funny things happen in our classroom, some of the spots ended up on students, too!  They must be contagious!

Feel the Love

We've had a lovely Valentine's Day here in PPCD.  We finished creating pink/red heart pattern headbands for everyone, we distributed valentines (thanks for participating, everyone!!!), we water colored a bunch of hearts with messages on them, we created heart collages, and we had tons of fun in centers. When we went on our learning walk we were lucky to find a heart pattern JUST LIKE the ones we did on our headbands.  We read the pattern sentence (red, pink, red, pink....) all together.  It was an awesome discovery!

Hearts and Fire Trucks

We've been having a wonderful week!  The most amazing thing happened!  I'm not sure if you know this or not, but there are fairies that live in our neighborhood.  Ms. Parsons has connections, so she invited some to come live in our classroom.  Ask your kiddo to show you where they live.  So, so exciting!

In our home center this week we've had dolls, nuts and bolts, power tools, purses, scarves, and more.  So many wonderful conversations happening there!  Our reading center is filled with books about hearts, Valentine's Day, and fire fighters.  We've also been working really hard on our class heart project.  Look for it to appear in the hallway soon!!

Hearts and the Color Red

February is here!  That means it's time to learn all about the color red and the heart shape.  This week we've been creating a heart mural.  We've already used crayons, markers, and glue.  With Valentine's Day coming up, we've also been creating our own heart-shaped pouches for our Valentines exchange coming up on the 14th (I'll be sending a list of names home tomorrow if you'd like to participate).  As soon as Valentine's Day passes we'll begin learning all about fire fighters, fire trucks, and fire stations.  So exciting!
